Following the path started in two previous projects, El Quijote Interactivo and El Leonardo Interactivo, we hereby present Calleja Interactivo / Interactive Calleja, which consists of the digital edition of Plaga de Dragones / Plague of Dragons, a collection of Spanish stories for children published by Calleja Publishing House in 1923.

This collection consists of sixteen stories presented in two languages, Spanish and English. Each text appears along with a dramatized audio narration and a series of pedagogical and cultural notes. Furthermore, a selection of the stories is also presented contrastively in a bilingual version.

The stories in Plaga de Dragones / Plague of Dragons have been designed to be used either autonomously or in the classroom. This collection has the purpose of fostering in new generations, so fond of audiovisual materials, the pleasure of reading and learning through the old stories from a contemporary perspective. The stories have been updated, digitized and enriched with annotations and ideas for activities and games with a double pedagogical and entertaining goal.

To this end, we have selected and reformatted a collection of unique stories that are still relevant despite the physical, temporal and cultural distance, with a view to encouraging young readers to establish connections between different societies and their own traditions and values.

Calleja Interactivo / Interactive Calleja is part of the eLITE-CM: Edición Literaria Electrónica (Electronic Literary Edition) project (ref. no. H2015/HUM-3426). It was undertaken between 2016 and 2019 by the LEETHI and ATLAS research groups from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the National Distance Education University (UNED) respectively, under the coordination of Professors María Goicoechea (UCM) and Elena Bárcena (UNED).

The project is indebted to UNED’s Audiovisual Media Center (CEMAV) for undertaking all the audio recordings and enrichment, and to the Spanish National Library for providing us with the initial digitized Spanish version of the book.
